Stags route challenge

These photos illustrate the route in the forum. They are in order taken on the route. Best conditions are a light to moderate southerly. Good landings are possible along the whole route. You don't need a large amount of height to make the transitions between ridges but a little thermal helps. The run east to Nappa has a ridge half way that helps. You may arrive low at Nappa but it does work from quite low down. The final run east from Nappa follows shallow edges and leads forward to a grassy round-topped outcrop (Ivy Scar) that soars. With a few hundred feet gained here it allows an easy run into good fields near Capperby. Plenty of fields but avoid crop and stock. All points of the route are served by pubs.

  • Crossing valley from Humesett. Can be done using Humesett but best to make it in one transition. Each spur is a thermal hot spot in fair conditions.

  • Approaching TP1 and looking down Garsdale. The moors provide good thermal sources and there are good triggers in front of the ridge.

  • Looking east along Cotter Side; easier on return back to Stags as usually wind has a touch of west in it in this area.

  • Nappa Scar looking west. Long transistion from Stags but a top up ridge half way (trees visible at ridge) if required. Two roads split the moor; the gradual upslope means fairly bouyant across to Nappa.

  • South from Nappa along shallow edges to final cliffs (Ivy Scar) - possible rotor effects (2k distance away) and Caperby 2k beyond around corner. Good pub in village.
